Avignon PLU: construction of 6,500 housing units near the new tramway

Avignon PLU: construction of 6,500 housing units near the new tramway In blue: a priority zone in Avignon where many housing units will be built.

Avignon wants to reach 100,000 inhabitants by 2030

The Local Urban Plan (PLU) of the municipality of Avignon is currently being revised, with approval planned for 2020. The city wants to reach 100,000 inhabitants. Avignon will therefore build 6,500 housing units : 3,500 will reuse existing buildings, the remaining 3, 000 will be new housing units.

It is in the south of the commune that construction will be most numerous: the Monclar, Joly Jean and Grand Cyprès districts are identified as priority districts in the New National Urban Renewal Programme (NPNRU).

There is plenty of land to the east and near the new tramway

The first tram line in Avignon will be inaugurated in October 2019 and will link the Saint-Roch district and the Université des Métiers to the Saint-Chamand district, to the east of the town. This district will be home to many projects:

  • The Plaine des Sports: 7 hectares dedicated to sports and leisure activities. The project has already begun with the rehabilitation of the water sports stadium

La Plaine des Sports Avignon

  • the Bel-Air Concerted Development Zone (ZAC): this will be the first neighbourhood to be awarded the Quartier Durable Méditerranéen (QDM) label . Eventually, the district will include 950 homes
  • In the longer term, the Avignon Confluence project plans to build on 100 hectares around the Avignon TGV station

To the west of the town, in the centre of the tramway line, a project has already been completed: the Joly Jean Ecoquartier. In 2023, a second tramway line is expected to be built, which will serve the boulevards surrounding the city centre. Many new land opportunities will then be available.

Construction continues on the urban fringes

The urban fringes are spaces awaiting projects. The city of Avignon intends to use them to create new housing in the following three areas:

  • Mathe Grand Riban: this area will be radically transformed by reusing existing buildings and building new housing
  • Le Clos des Garrigues: at the level of the Avignon Sud train station, at the entrance to the town, new housing will be built
  • The Aerodrome and Exhibition Centre: airport activities will be developed here
